This movie was fucking epic, let's just get into it, okay? (Spoilers ahead, go to last paragraph for a spoiler free summary)

It starts rather abruptly, A few million years ago, a red clad humanoid wakes up in an ashen forest and starts dragging himself, he contacts "Alpha" and says that his plan failed and Alpha should send a meteor to his location. Dragging himself across the what appears to be beaten ground, he says he's sorry to a yellow-clad warrior, her armor fades revealing a bird-monster and he just says "Sorry" over and over as this presumable female presumably dies. More crawling and this red dude buries some gem things... and then the Green one shows up. A back and forth about a crystal and ruling the universe together, we learn the Red dude is named "Zordon" and the Green one's name is "Rita" and that's when the meteor hits.

A few million years of shit happening on Earth later and we cut to a modern Highscool setting, two kids are trying to leave a bull in a locker room, there's a joke about one of them "Milking" him, they have to out run the cops and end up crashing, hard cut and on a side note, the kid's dad, Sam, the actor looks like Austin St. John, the original Red Ranger. Just a bit. But this kid it turns out, basically threw away a good reputation, kid wrote his ticket to college on his good football record, but that's gone now and his dad is pissed off, partly because Jason is spending every Saturday in detention, there he meats three other kids, A bully, Who to my annoyance was not called "Eugene", "Farkas", "Bulk", or "Skull" He's just given a throw away name mentioned once later and the official imdB page just calls him "Bully" He's that one note and forgettable, I can't even remember the name they gave him. But basically, In detention, this Jason kid beats the bully up because he's picking on the "Billy" character. When the teacher shows up, a girl excuses herself.

She goes to the bathroom and we learn this is Kimberly, and interestingly, instead of using her clothes to indicate her color, they use a pair of scissors her cheer leader "Friends" (They basically tell her to burn in hell for something I won't spoil because it's kinda major) Pin a picture to a wall with, she uses it to cut her hair, which I thought she was gonna cut herself with at first. She comes back to the class with trimmed hair, much to the delight of the other students, and it all goes on as normal, after detention, Jason and billy talk a bit and Jason is under house arrest, he has to be back at his house by Seven at the latest and Billy says he can hack it, and after hearing his parents arguing, Jason goes To Billy's and he hacks it... although I don't remember Billy telling him his house number or street. Yadda yadda Jason and Billy go to the Quary outside Angel Grove, the city the whole shebang takes place in.

Before we see them we get two anonymous characters, one dude is camping on a roof and he spots a girl doing yoga on a rock. This moment is pointless, I think. Yes, it introduces us to new characters, but it's out of left field. Any how, when Billy and Jason are at the Quarry, we learn that Billy's dad, who perished, brought him there a lot, feeling there was something good to be found, there was also learn Billy is "On the Spectrum." Yes. Billy in this universe is Autistic. I like that actually. When Jason makes a joke about that being a work out routine and Billy says it's a diagnosis and that his brain doesn't work like most people, I can't help but think of all the really smart characters in old shows that had those kinds of things going on.

There's a bit of an intimate scene between Jason and Kimberly who goes out to the Quarry and swims in a nearby lake. All about leaving the town. An explosion caused by Billy, looking for his Father's good thing, draws the two teens from Earlier, this universe's Zack and Trini, alon with Jason and Kimberly, Zack, who works at the Quarry as a miner, starts chiseling out this massive obsidian wall, getting the five colored things within. they're all coin-like and colored different, JAson gets red, Kim gets pink, Billy gets blue, Zack gets black, and Trini gets yellow. There's a chase involving the cops and it ends with the teens getting hit by a train.

The next morning, they wake up, some finding themselves stronger then before (Rangers to the core, go Zeo) and breaking shit in their houses. Kim, Billy, and Jason get some weird stuff happening to them at School, and they resolve to visit the Quarry. Meanwhile, with Jason's dad, he's found an old corpse out at sea, turns out he's a fisherman. More Yadda yadda and the teens all jump over a massive pit that, as it turns out, has water beneath it... now comes a line in the movie I loathe. The teens take note of how they "Glow" it's the colors of the coins, and then Zack says "I'm black" which Billy takes offence to.

Yeah, in this movie, everyone except the red and pink rangers have had their race swapped about from the original power rangers actors. Billy is black, Zack is Asian, and Trini is Hispanic. In the original show Zack was black, Trini was Asian, and Billy was White. I know WHY they made the change, and I think it's one of the few valid times to change a race, accidental racism. Yeah, Black and Yellow were black and Asian, this was an accident. No one, NOT EVEN THE ACTORS noticed until roughly episode 10 and by then it was to late to shake things up.

So yeah, There wasn't really any need to call attention to it. Anyhow, After the scene in the water, the kids dive and find this weird mirror-like surface, turns out that at the bottom of this water is, I'm serious here, another surface of water. Swimming through it, they find a path way, then an alien ship. Some exploring and a brief game of hide and seek with a weird little robot named Alpha 5 later and we learn that the Zordon character is stuck in the ship's mainframe and explains to these teens that they are now power rangers, and then he explains their mission statement, protecting the innocent. From the former Green Ranger, Rita Repulsa, she wants something called "The Zeo Crystal" Which in this universe is the reason life exists. Whatever planet shards of it landed on spawned life. And it's so powerful and Rita wants it. She's been woken up and the rangers have eleven days before she makes Goldar and starts ripping the planet apart for the Crystal. The rangers are taken to a sort of hologram room and fight holograms of Putties, who in this universe look like they're just made of stone. CUE EPIC MONTAGE.

Some training and a cut to Rita or two later and we learn about the Zords. Massive robots that take on the forms of the fiercest and mightiest creatures on the planet. The Red is a T-Rex, pink is a pterodactyl, Blue is a Triceratops, and confusingly Yellow is a Sabertooth tiger and black is a mammoth. In the old show, it made some kind of sense, the animals used are these big intimidating things, but for no reason in this one, three dinosaurs, and two mammals that came WAY later. Alpha points out that they "Form" I'm not sure how because the movie doesn't expand on that, but I think they maybe formed a bit after, like maybe the original black and yellow zords were laid out... perhaps against Goldar and the Green zord, which may have also been destroyed.

During this montage and these scenes with Rita, Billy figures out where the Zeo Crystal is... It's under the local Krispy Kreme. Which would be funny if they didn't say it over and over and over and over and over and over again a little later. Also, after the rangers see the zords, Zack steals his, and then gets in a fight with Jason over it, Billy Morphs to sop it. Oddly the rangers are having trouble morphing, as part of the montage. So it just happens to billy and everyone is like "So that's what we'll look like? Cool." and then Zordon sends them home for the day. We also learn that when the Rangers get their mojo together, Zordon can come back alive and help them fight Rita.

There's actually a very touching scene around a fire, the Rangers opening up to each other because one of them figures that their trouble morphing comes from not knowing one another very well. I wanna say "Sorry" for not pointing out a lot of this movie is VERY character driven, You see and understand that they're legit characters and who they are and that that's all important. I'm not spoiling what they say because it's all very solidly written and well acted and GO SEE THIS MOVIE.

Rita attacks Trini and tried to tell her to join her, Rita says she too was the loner/outcast of the team she was on, she understands. The next scene is Trini telling the Rangers Rita attacked her and they go after Rita, Knowing where she is, oddly. I don't recall Rita saying "I'm at the docks" but there was a news story about a lot of murders happening there. So I guess they maybe saw those. Turns out it was a trap and Rita kills Billy after learning where the Crystal is... insert "Krispy Kreme" being said about five times, too.

The Rangers get free and haul Billy to the Command Center, sadly, nothing can be done it seems, and then the rangers all say "I'd trade my life for his." At this point, some jargon happens and Zordon can indeed bring himself back to life... But he brings Billy back instead. The Rangers morph and Rita heads to the local god mine, Bringing the gold together and making her giant monster... who I hate in this movie. The original Goldar was massive even at a human scale, he had this angry Gorilla wolf face, He was muscular as shit. This thing is thin and Waspy and... It's like Even as a giant imposing monster made of shifting gold, he's just not intimidating. The original was. This guy isn't. He still presents a clear threat, though, so kudos there.

There's a MASSIVE fight scene following that, The rangers take on putties and it's pretty sick despite only the Red Ranger having a real weapon, and the Orchestral version of "Go go power Rangers" is in this scene, when the Zords start running and the Rangers are inside them. The charge is so fucking cool... tragically it's cut WAY short. Like if memory serves it stops Mid-lyric. After that, it's the rangers smashing up Putties, Rita eating one of the doughnuts at Krispy Kreme while she waits for Goldar to smash it, and then the fight with Goldar. They get thrown into the pit of the Zeo Crystal and end up forming the Megazord in it. The whole sequence is the thing on fire. They trip getting to to walk at first and then fight Goldar very briefly, who has Rita powering him up, this has to be a reference to the original movie where Ivan Ooze powers his Ectomorphicon Hornitor up by merging with it. Sadly nothing really changes on Goldar whereas with Hornitor Got Ooze's face. All that happens is he gets a slight Green glow. The movie ends with a Job well done for the Rangers because not only is Goldar dead, Rita has been bitch slapped into space. The after credits scene hints at Tommy Oliver being in the next one.

In short, The movie is a fun time with a lot of Good character and heart. The CG is okay, the designs are meh, references are so back handed you may not notice them, That's good. I recommend you go see it if you're a fan of the show or not. This needs a sequel to answer some questions and such but it's otherwise a FANTASTIC movie.

Verdict: Morphenomenal
